Ruffled Textiles Tutorial

Yesterday I shared this layout with you! 

Today I'd like to walk you through how I created the ruffled textile pieces. 

Let's get to it, Shall we?! :) 

 

Similar to the Ruffled Ribbon I created (tutorial here) last week, I started with cardstock bases in the length I needed for the textiles.  

My pieces for this project measured 1.75" X 4.5" and 1.75" X 2.5" 

 Since my bases were 1.75" wide I cut my textile strip 2.5" wide to give adequate room to hem the edges. 

Close to my Heart Textiles are about 14" wide so my piece ended up being 2.5" X 14" 

I'm not a great big fan of lugging stuff around and one night I had a lightbulb turn on inside my head...instead of dragging my iron and board into my studio I grabbed my flat iron! Whoot! :) Yes, I really am using a $100 flat iron for a scrapbook page....(my husband would just shake his head!)

It really works like a charm! And PORTABLE! With just a couple passes you are wrinkle free! 

Now that you have a nice flat piece to work with turn it over to the backside.  Using your ruler and  Chalk Marker measure and draw a line .25" from the top and bottom "rough edges".  This step is not necessary but it helps in getting a straight edge when you are creating your "faux hem".

Run adhesive, (like tombow) on the outside edges of your chalk line.

After your adhesive is applied begin folding over the rough edges to create a nice faux hemmed edge. 

Once again, break out ole trusty flat iron and give the hems a great crisp! Holy Smokes, wasn't that easier than dragging your iron around?! :)

Now you should have a piece of hemmed fabric approximately 2" X 14".  You will need to cut it into two separate pieces, one 9" X 2" and the other 5" X 2"

Now add a bit of adhesive to the first end of your fabric.

Adhere one of your bases to the end of your fabric as shown. 

Place a bit of adhesive on the outer edges near the end and fold in the fabric that extends past your base.

Next, cover the entire cardstock base with adhesive, be generous.

Begin ruffling your fabric onto the sticky base, it does not need to be perfect, just make sure you do have enough to reach the other end.  If you goof, just peel it up and start over. :)

After you've ruffled to the opposite end, flip your base over and trim off any excess, then run a strip of adhesive on the backside and adhere the fabric ends to it.

I topped my ruffle with some Black Glitter Paper and a zip strip from the Dream Pop Paper collection.  My glitter paper pieces measured 5.5" X .75" and 3.5" X .75", my zip strips were also 5.5" and 3.5" in length.

Apply liquid glass onto the backsides of the glitter paper and adhere it to the fabric, press firmly. 

Fold the ends to the underneath side of the ruffled base. Not pretty, good thing we'll never see it. :)

Since I was generous with the Liquid Glass I placed my pieces onto a small scrap of a transparency sheet (hard to see in the photo), this way any glue that seeps out won't accidentally glue my pieces to something they aren't supposed to be glued to. :)

Now SMASH them! :) Toss something heavy on top of your pieces and leave them a while.  Five Close to my Heart Idea books work perfectly! :)

Starburst Tutorial

As promised, today I want to share with you a short tutorial on how I created this Starburst Card!

 

Please hang with me as my pictures are terrible! Poorly lit area, using a STONE AGE Mobile phone, and a very sleepy camera operator is an awful combination. If I made excuses then I'd get NOTHING accomplished so hopefully you can get past the poor quality make use of it any way. :) 

Let's Do It, Shall we?! :) 

This card is a typical A2 size (4.25" X 5.5") so my "soon-to-be-triangle" pieces were cut at 1.5" X 4"....you will need 8-10 depending on how you prefer to arrange them. I love that we can use scrap sized paper! (THRIFTY GIRL) 

After you have your pieces trimmed you will need to make a diagonal cut from corner to corner, giving you 2 triangles of the same size. 

I cut my face (you will use this as your base for the triangle pieces) at .25" smaller than my card base.  The black cardstock is 4" X 5.25" in size.  I used my chalk marker (love that is shows so well on the dark cardstock) to draw a "cheat" line about 1.25" from the bottom of the face.  This step isn't necessary but it's helpful for me so I keep my Pieces where they need to be. 

Next, cover the space above the chalk line with a strong "dry" adhesive like Tombow.   

Since I was half asleep while I was creating this card and taking these photos I put my adhesive on BEFORE I laid out my pieces....so I'm cheating by using a 2nd face the same size to make sure I get them arranged the way I'd like before adhering. 

Okay, back on track! I placed them on the adhesive covered face, any pieces that are hanging below the chalk line should be trimmed to prevent them from showing later after further embellishment.

Flip your starburst covered face over then trim off the pieces hanging past the edge.  By putting your adhesive on the FACE instead of on the triangles you prevent sticking the triangles onto your work surface, prevent gumming up your scissors, and you are preserving your scraps for use later. (not easy to use scraps when they are covered in adhesive) THRIFTY GIRL!  :)

 Now, isn't that Darling?! :) Okay, so the photo quality is making me nauseous but the card is DARLING, right?! :)

The flowers I used were from the Close to my Heart Art Philosophy Cricut Cartridge. (One of MY FAVORITE THINGS EVER!!)

The Blue flowers were sized at 1.75", 1.5", and 1.25"

The Yellow and White flowers were sized at 1.5", 1.25", and 1"

I layered and attached them using a few glue dots after distressing the edges with a sponge and Cocoa Ink.  

I gave them a bit more dimension by folding up the petals (as shown here)

 I used some Black waxy Flax to thread through the buttons and adhered them with another glue dot. 

 I adhered a strip of the Silver Shimmer trim across the chalk line to cover the seam, attached the flowers, stamped my sentiment and attached it with 3-D foam tape. 

I hope you can see the dimension that the foam tape gives your banners when you place it "just right" :)

The inside is just as easy, cut your base to any size you desire, (I cut mine at 1.5" X 5.25") Cover in adhesive, arrange your triangles, and place them on the base.  

 Trim as you did on the front face....I bet you can do it blindfolded and one arm tied behind your back now. :)

 Adhere the base to the inside of your card...easy as can be!

A Little Burst of Sun!

It's cold here! We've had 3 days of near 90 degree weather here in the Ozarks and it didn't last long! Now we have 30s and a chance of snow! YIKES! 

I'm sharing some Sun to brighten your day! Well...a SUNBURST, that is. :) 

It seems like the Sunbursts are pretty hot right now in paper crafting world and thanks to one of my consultant buds I learned how to create them with ease.  I loved the tutorial she showed me but wanted to make a few changes to the steps so I just decided to make my own.  I'll be sharing that with you tomorrow so please come visit me then! 

In the mean time here is one of my newest Sunburst cards.  It might be a little more eclectic than my normal style but it's growing on me. 

This card was a special request for a graduation...she asked for Royal blue and gold-yellow.  I gathered small pieces of B&T from the Close to My Heart Tommy, Superhero, and For Always My Reflections Paper kits.  Yes, strange! :) 

I love how easy the Close to My Heart Art Philosophy Cricut Cartridge makes whipping up a few flowers! Literally just a few minutes and you have an entire handful to play with! :) 

Add a few bling buttons and my ever trusty Shimmer Trim (Have I told you this fantastic stuff is adhesive backed?!) to give it some shine, a small stamped banner and you are Done! SO FAST and easy! 

I also Always Always Always "pretty" up the insides of my greeting cards! Why not add another starburst on the inside, right?! Just a little extra pizzazz. :)
